Black Lake Pastors' Retreat
Columbia River Zone hosted a retreat for WaPac pastors and spouses at the Black Lake Bible Camp, January 13-15. Twenty-one district ministers and twelve spouses participated in the “Continual Renewal” event. Special speakers Tim Westerberg (Vancouver Hillcrest), Dave McClung (Gig Harbor), Bill Bowers (Olympia Mt. View), and Jerry Moen (McMinnville, OR) led the group in inspirational teaching, transparent testimony, and spiritual discovery. Mike Cook (Vancouver Hillcrest) and his son-in-law, Rolando, led special moments of corporate worship in song.
Pastors Tim Westerberg and Bill Bowers peeled back the recesses of their hearts and allowed God to use their transparent testimonies to encourage, uplift, challenge, convict, and point the way to being “Christ-like Leaders.”
Gig Harbor layman, Dave McClung, immersed his topic in Scripture as he led an enlightening discussion on “How to pastor the wealthy.” Ten questions formed the outline of the study that concluded with the declaration: “Wealthy individuals need pastors too”: (1) Why are some people more wealthy than others? (2) How should a pastor relate to wealthy parishioners? (3) What are a pastor’s primary duties in relation to wealthy parishioners? (4) What are some of the primary issues for the wealthy? (5) Why do many wealthy individuals drop out? (6) What kinds of things cause wealthy individuals to be unhappy? (7) How should a pastor communicate to a wealthy parishioner about giving? (8) Is there a place for “class envy” in church? (9) Should a church be “intentional” in recruiting wealthy individuals? Should a pastor be a close personal friend with a wealthy individual?
Visiting Oregon Pacific pastor, Jerry Moen, shared his story from McMinnville Church on the Hill. His heart throbs with passion for reaching the lost. The message shared renewed the call to “Missional Vision” for all Washington Pacific pastors.
A loss of electrical power Monday evening did not interrupt the spirit of prayerful worship and intercession. Instead of the sentiment, “turn out the lights, the party’s over,” Wes Smith (Longview) reminded the group the following morning that when the lights went out, the “party” had only just begun. God’s power was manifest in many ways throughout the forty-two hour retreat. Sincere thanks are extended to Columbia River Zone leaders for the hours of planning and preparation that resulted in a significant moving of God’s presence among our pastors and spouses. Special thanks to Wes Smith (Longview), Mike Knapp (Pleasant View), Tim Westerberg (Vancouver Hillcrest).
