Dr. Samuel and Phyllis Hynd (retired)

Samuel Hynd arrived in Africa from Glasgow with his missionary parents when he was just five months old. He accepted Christ as a 13-year-old under the ministry of Swazi pastor Joseph Mkhwanazi. Hynd studied medicine in Johannesburg, South Africa, Glasgow, and London before returning to Swaziland as a medical missionary doctor for the Church of the Nazarene in 1950.

He has had a long association with Swaziland’s Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital and its various clinics and health centers such as the Leprosy Hospital and Nurses’ Training College. The Nazarene hospital is a 350-bed regional referral and teaching hospital situated in Manzini, Swaziland. The hospital provides quality health care services in a holistic approach that is physical, emotional, social, and spiritual to the people of the Manzini region. David Hynd, father of Samuel Hynd, founded RFM.

In addition to his work with RFM, Hynd was director of relief and development for the Swaziland Conference of Churches. He served in the Cabinet of King Sobhuza II as the Minister of Health after his official relationship with the Mission ended. Hynd also served as the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Swaziland Nazarene Health Institutions between 1992 and 1997. He and his family are active members of the Sharpe Memorial Church of the Nazarene in Manzini. He has received many honors in his distinguished career, including being knighted as a Commander of the British Empire from Queen Elizabeth II.

Dr. Hynd married Phyllis McNeil after the death of Rosemarie Hynd.
