Work & Witness Trip

In September 2017, Hurricane Maria ripped across the island of Dominica as a category 5 storm with 160 mph winds.  Not a single area of the island or a single resident was left untouched.  Known for their neighborly nature the Dominicans had given their emergency supplies to other Islands impacted by hurricane Irma earlier in the summer. This left them with little on hand when they were hit by Maria. The hurricane inflected serious damage on roads, building, homes, and health facilities.  The forests that gave it the name "nature island" have been stripped away.  Despite the massive devastation and needs left in Hurricane Maria's wake, the world has largely moved on, with the conditions in Dominica barely breaking into the news cycle.

We have six Nazarene churches on the island, four of which were completely or substantially destroyed by the storm.  Beyond that, there are dozens and dozens of church families who lost their homes or suffered major damage.

WaPac is sending a team to help rebuild.  Details and logistics are still being worked out but the dates are May 25 - June 1st If you are interested, please let Debra know debra@voelkereng.com

Pastor Pascal Hilton, the DS of Dominica Church of the Nazarene, wrote “Debra, we will greatly and humbly appreciate all the help that you all can give to bring our churches back to the point where we can worship together again.”
