WAPAC organized its third Samoan church on Sunday, October 7. Lakewood Samoan, pastored by Rev. Taulima Oge, follows Seattle Samoan (1993-Rev. Ioe Lemaveve), and Tacoma First Samoan (2000-Rev. Falanie ‘Antonio’ Felise). A fourth Samoan congregation, led by Pastor James Sui, was started this year at Kent First church. Joining the celebration from California was Rev. Talomua Mona, Chairman of the Conference of Samoan Nazarene Churches in USA/Canada, and Rev. Koroseta Letoa, Secretary of the Conference. These Conference officers, pastoring Samoan churches in San Diego and Sacramento, traveled by car with other Samoan Nazarenes from California in order to give support and encouragement to the new Lakewood Samoan Church, the 21st Samoan Nazarene church to be organized in the USA/Canada region. Nine Lakewood Samoan Nazarenes were received as charter members during the organization service and will be joined by others in the weeks ahead. Dr. Terry Ketchum, Director of Church Relations, stood in for WAPAC District Superintendent, Dr. Hugh L. Smith, to organize this congregation. Dr. Smith sent special greetings to this new church from Georgia where he and Miriam are visiting their daughter Carla (husband Kevin Berggren), following her recent heart attack and subsequent surgery.
Following the service, the celebration continued at the Lakewood American Veterans building where other invited guests from the Samoan community joined the festivities. Rev. Ron Kearns, nearby Lakewood New Hope Community pastor, represented the sponsoring Nazarene congregation. Negotiations are underway to have the WAPAC District and the Lakewood Samoan church purchase the building the Samoan congregation is currently using.
